Happy Birthday, Baby!

I love my girl. She is such a little character.
We celebrated her birthday as a family and had so much fun. She loves to dance and L-O-V-E-S to sing. Her favorites are Old McDonald and I Am A Child of God. She loves Dora, Kai Lan, and anything princess. Her big sister is her best friend (when they aren't terrorizing each other). She loves pancakes and sandwiches. She has the most infectious smile and laugh, a wicked sense of humor and gives the absolute best hugs. I love you baby! Happy Birthday.

Fun At the Splash Park

We spent our last evening in Utah at a splash park in Herriman. The kids loved it and it was a nice end to a great visit.
Yuck!

Door to Another World

On the way home from church today, Emily told me with a huge pout pulling at her mouth "Joe said the elevator goes to Superman's secret place."

I sighed inwardly, trying not to go in to my "stop tattling" lecture that has pretty much been on auto repeat the last couple of weeks. "Where do you think the elevator leads to?" I asked, ignoring the fact that I had absolutely no idea what elevator we were talking about.

"She says it goes to a princess castle," said Joe, matter-of-factly.

"Well," I said, "Maybe it goes to both places."

Silence.

"Hey!" said Joe. "Maybe it's a magic elevator! Maybe it could go anywhere in the world. Wait! Anywhere in your whole imagination!"

We then took turns for the rest of the ride home talking about where we would like to go on the magic elevator. Joe and Emily stuck with their original destinations. Mary wanted to go see a talking monkey and I wanted to go ride a zipline in the rain forest.

As it turns out, the elevator they were talking about was in Joe's room.

His bed has drawers in the bottom. One broke and was removed, leaving a two foot by six inch rectangular hole. In the back of the hole are some broken pieces of the drawer and the backboard from the base of the bed. This was their elevator if only they could just squeeze back there to push the buttons and unlock its magic.

I love that their world is full of amazing possibilities, even magical ones, where ordinary spaces become gateways with Narnia or Wonderland or a zipline in Costa Rica just a magical button or door knob away.

The Whole Need No Physician

On the way into the house this evening, Emily tripped on the front porch, ramming her shin into the brick step. Ouch! She got the anticeptic/bandaid treatment and things are looking at least a little less tragic.

After she said her prayers, I was saying good night and mentioned that we get to go to church tomorrow. Emily asked "But, what about my bandaids?"
"You can go even with bandaids," I assured her.
To which she asked with a hint of wonder in her voice, "Can anyone go with bandaids?"
"Yes. Anyone can go to church even if they have bandaids on."

I think especially when they have bandaids on.

The number of cousins doubled in the 3 1/2 years since we left Utah. Crazy! The kids got lots of cousin time - though probably not enough!

Modern Day Children sang as they drove and drove and drove and drove

Driving across country wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. Our c/d DVD deck blew out a couple of months ago, and we chose not to fix it. It was kind of nice to have the car quiet. Many conversations happened that wouldn't have otherwise. So, our trip was completely unplugged. I made the three older kids binders with fun and coloring pages and other things like that, gave each child a little plastic basket with handles to put all of their things in, and made a bunch of travel-sized flannel board stories. That combined with a ginormous bag of snacks and a lot of night driving made for a pretty smooth trip. We made the 27 hour drive from home to western CO without a hitch. Here are some pictures from our drive.

Right before our final major stop we stumble upon Metropolis, IL which boasted a Giant statue of Superman. The kids loved it.
