HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY!

Mary is one year old! I can't believe it! We had a very small party with Mom, Dad, brother and sister. It was nice and quiet after the craziness of moving. We are so glad to have our sweet Mary. She is happy and starting to get a little sassy - she will definitely be able to keep up with Emily. We love her hugs and we love her laugh. She has four teeth now, can take five or six steps in a row, loves making kisses, and can crawl up the stairs (but not down!). Oh, and she LOVES chocolate.

Happy Birthday, Mary! We love you!

Jogging lessons

On Monday morning, I went jogging with a few ladies from my ward. We met at the head of a trail and stretched and chatted. They asked how far everyone was going. Most were going the entire 8 mile loop. I think at the sound of 8 miles, my heart involuntarily stopped as a preemptive measure. One of the ladies, Jen, was only going on a short run (4 or so miles) because she had to go home early. I decided I would turn back with her. Well, we started out and things went pretty well. I'm not sure how far I went, but eventually the 3 hours of sleep I had the night before began to catch up with me. In addition, Jen and most of the others had gone ahead. I told Susie (who was bringing up the rear) I had reached my limit and was going to turn back. She continued on and I turned back. It was a nice walk through the woods. Beautiful, with the sun rising through the trees and with the periodic glimpses of the lake. After a few minutes, I came to the fork in the trail that I remembered passing on the way. I thought that we had come in one direction, but the intersection was oddly shaped and I wasn't sure. There were trail signs on the tree, but I had no idea which trail we were on and which one led back to our cars. I made my best guess, hoping Jen would come quickly on her way back. After a half hour of walking, and still no sign of Jen or the cars, I began to think that maybe I had taken the wrong trail. It sure would have been nice to have known the name of the trail or been with someone who did. Well, this story didn't turn out as horribly as it could have. I was, in fact, on the wrong trail, but the only consequence was that it took me at least twice as long to get back to my car, by which time Jen was long gone. As I was walking, it gave me time to think. I was thinking about how wonderful it is that we have prophets and we have the scriptures. As we are going along, Heavenly Father has given us parents and mentors, church leaders and prophets who walk with us and show us which forks to take in order to stay on the right trail. And, if we're observant and listen, and ask the right questions, when we are alone we will be able to use the trail markers to make sure we don't get off course. Like the iron rod in Lehi's vision, the scriptures keep us on track and help us to know which path we ought to be on and which forks we should take. It's also nice to know that if we do get off course, there's always repentance. And, the sooner we turn back, the less time it will take to get back to the trail head.

Moving Day

We are home! We moved on Saturday and stayed for the first time that night. The kids were so excited! They love their new home. But it was a long day and we are glad to be done.

Matt was laying on a pile of blankets and all the kids tackled him.

Moving!!

We closed on our house today! We are so excited! Not only is it bigger, it is OURS! (Well in 30 years it will be ours!) We move on Saturday and we can't wait. Now, for the absolute craziness of moving three little kids to a new house. Bring it on!

siblings

It's so fun to watch the kids interact. It's odd to think that they are starting into the territory of growing up where they their interactions with each other mean as much as their interactions with their parents. I love seeing the unfolding family dynamic as the kids learn how they fit in the family.

Goofy kids and a few more Independence Day pictures

Kids are so fun! Isn't it wonderful that they are so spontaneous and so completely THEM!

Emmy and Joe love playing together and have elaborate games that I rarely understand. This was one of their goofy moments.

?
I honestly have no idea. Joe is a character.

Our little budding artist! Mary loved this beret. She kept putting it back on (at least trying) whenever it fell off and was constantly adjusting it. It was so cute to see her assert her preference.

I forgot that we had taken pictures on the 4th.

Mary was so happy that day. Ha.
This is the parade we went to on the 5th at the church.

Fireworks, picnics and ghastly fumes

We had a wonderful Fourth of July Weekend. On Thursday we went to Burlington for their fireworks show. We got KFC for a picnic at the park, then the kids played kickball, watched the ants climbing all over the trees and made new friends. Unfortunately, our perfect spot soon became crowded. Crowds are alright, but here is my big rant. Okay. So I just wrote about twenty lines in a rant and realized I was completely off topic, so I erased it. I wish people wouldn't smoke around little children. We were completely surrounded and by the time the fireworks started, you could see (albeit through bleary, burning eyes) a haze hanging over the crowd that had nothing to do with the upcoming fireworks. But, the kids loved the fireworks. Mary wasn't completely sure that she liked them, but as long as I was holding her she was alright. She blinked every time they exploded. Emily and Joe loved them, especially Joe. He was so cute! He was dancing around the whole time before they started talking about how excited he was. On the actual 4th, we spent the day at home watching movies and playing in the backyard with the kids.

On Saturday, we went to a parade at the church and then a program afterwards. It was fun to sing and here patriotic music and listen to good words about this country and our freedoms. Sometimes you get so caught up in the "what, where, and when" that you forget about the "Why" of the holiday. I guess that is one of the big struggles in this life, in general; not getting caught up by the crazy pace of life and forget to pay respect to those who have gone before. I am thankful for our founding fathers and I am thankful for all of the men and women since who have dedicated everything so that I could have my current happiness and freedoms - most especially for the freedom of religion that has made possible all of the things that I hold most dear - my knowledge of the gospel and my ability to make sacred covenants, my beautiful family that I can be with forever, the principles that will lead me to a happy life. Thank you!!
